What is a domain name?
A domain name is your address on the internet, such as yourbusiness.com. You register it for a period, usually one year at a time, and renew it to keep it. It should be registered in your name so that you, not your web designer, own it.
02
What is web hosting?
Hosting is the computer that stores your website and sends it to visitors. Fast, reliable hosting means your pages load quickly and your site stays online. Good managed hosting also includes backups and monitoring, so a problem is caught early and can be fixed.
03
What is SSL and why does it matter?
An SSL certificate encrypts the connection between your site and your visitors and gives you the padlock and https in the address bar. Browsers warn visitors away from sites without it, and search engines prefer secure sites. It should be included with your hosting, not an extra.
04
What about business email?
A branded address such as you@yourbusiness.com looks more trustworthy than a free webmail address. It uses your domain, so it is usually set up alongside your hosting.

A short checklist before you buy
- Is the domain registered in my name, and can I transfer it away?
- Is SSL included?
- Are backups and uptime monitoring included?
- Who looks after renewals, and will I be reminded before they happen?
- If I use a domain I already own, can it be connected to my new site?

Getting it all in one place
For a small business, the least painful route is one provider looking after the domain, hosting and site together, so nothing falls through the gaps. Every ideas2pixels plan includes your domain registered in your name, secure hosting with SSL, backups and monitoring. If you already own a domain, we connect it for you.
Common questions
Do I own my domain name?
You should. A trustworthy provider registers the domain in your name and lets you transfer it away, subject to the registrar's standard transfer rules. Always check this before you buy.
Do I need hosting if I have a domain?
Yes. A domain is only the address. Hosting is where the website itself lives, and you need both for a working site.
Can I use a domain I already have?
Yes. An existing domain can be connected to a new website with a couple of DNS changes, or transferred to your new provider.
