GEO and AEO: How to Get Your Small Business Recommended by AI Search

More people now ask an AI tool a question instead of scrolling a page of links: who is the best dentist near me, how much does a website cost, which café is open on Sunday. Marketers call the work of showing up in those answers GEO (generative engine optimization) or AEO (answer engine optimization). The labels are new. Most of the advice is the same careful groundwork that has always helped a small business get found.

01

GEO and AEO in plain English

Traditional SEO tries to get your page to rank in a list of results. GEO and AEO try to get your business named, quoted or summarised inside an answer written by an AI system. Google shows these as AI Overviews above the usual results, and assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity build answers from the web and from the sources they trust.

Be wary of anyone who sells a guaranteed spot. These systems change often, they do not publish exact rules, and the statistics circulating about how often AI answers appear vary widely from one report to the next. What you can control is how clear, complete and trustworthy your own information is.

02

Say plainly what you do, and where

AI tools pull from pages that answer a question directly. A homepage full of slogans gives them nothing to quote. Put the plain facts in the first screen of text: what you sell, who it is for, which town or area you serve, your opening hours and how to book.

  • One page per service, with a clear title such as Emergency Plumber in Leeds rather than Our Solutions.
  • Prices or price ranges where you can, because people ask about cost constantly.
  • A short FAQ on the page that answers the questions customers really ask you, in the words they use.
  • Your name, address and phone number written the same way everywhere.

03

Keep your outside profiles in line with your site

AI answers about local businesses lean on sources beyond your website: your Google Business Profile, review sites, directories and local news. If your hours differ between them, or an old address lingers on a directory, the answer can repeat the wrong one.

Claim and complete your Google Business Profile, keep it current, and ask happy customers for reviews. The detail in a review (what they bought, which staff member helped) gives the systems more to work with than a bare five stars.

04

Add structured data and keep the site fast

Structured data, usually written as JSON-LD schema markup, labels the facts on a page so software can read them without guessing: your business type, address, opening hours, services and reviews. It will not force an AI answer, but it removes ambiguity.

The page also has to be reachable. Make sure search engines are allowed to crawl it, that it loads quickly on a phone, and that the content is real text rather than text locked inside images. If you are not sure where you stand, run through the checks in our launch checklist.

Common questions

Is GEO different from SEO?

They overlap heavily. Good SEO (clear pages, a fast site, local profiles and reviews) is the foundation, and GEO adds attention to how well your facts can be read and quoted by AI tools.

Can I pay to appear in AI answers?

Not reliably. Be sceptical of anyone who guarantees placement. Focus on accurate information and a site people trust.

Do I need a blog for AI search?

Not necessarily, but useful, specific pages that answer real customer questions give both search engines and AI tools something to cite.
