How to Get More Google Reviews for Your Small Business (the Right Way)

When someone searches for a business near them, the stars and the number of reviews are often the first thing they compare. More recent, detailed reviews help you stand out in local results and make the decision to call or visit easier. The good news is that most owners simply never ask.

Five gold stars above a speech bubble, showing customer reviews for a local business.

01

Ask at the moment people are happiest

The best time to ask is straight after something has gone well: the job is finished, the meal was enjoyed, the compliment was just given. A short, personal request works better than a mass email months later.

  • Ask in person or in the message where you send the receipt.
  • Keep it simple: a sentence thanking them and the link.
  • Make it a habit, ideally part of your normal routine, not a campaign.

02

Make it one click

Every extra step loses people. Your Google Business Profile has a share link for asking for reviews, which takes the customer straight to the review box. Put it in an email signature, a text message, a QR code on the counter or a card handed over with the receipt.

You can also add a Leave a review button to your website, pointing at the same link. If you have not set up your profile yet, start with our Google Business Profile guide.

03

Reply to every review

Thank people for the good ones, mentioning something specific. For a bad review, reply calmly, apologise where it is fair, and offer to put it right offline. Future customers read the replies as much as the reviews, and a considered answer to criticism can win more trust than a perfect score.

04

What not to do

Google's policies prohibit offering discounts or gifts in exchange for reviews, and they prohibit review gating, which means only asking happy customers to post while steering unhappy ones elsewhere. Do not write reviews for your own business or ask friends who have never used it. Fake or incentivised reviews can be removed and can put your profile at risk.

Common questions

How many Google reviews do I need?

There is no magic number. A steady flow of recent, genuine reviews matters more than a burst, and it should look like your real customers.

Can I ask customers by email or text?

Yes, as long as you ask everyone fairly and do not offer anything in return.

Can I get a bad review removed?

Only if it breaks Google's policies, such as spam, fake or off-topic content. Otherwise reply politely and move on.
